While there are no major changes this year when it comes to features, the Ford Explorer nonetheless continues to impress in that regard by providing a long list of standard and optional features. Included with the base model is a 4.2-inch display infotainment system with voice commands, a rearview camera, USB ports, Bluetooth and six-speaker audio. But if you are looking for higher-end features, fear not, because the new Explorer offers a ton of options such as a 8-inch touch screen display with a SYNC3 interface, satellite radio, navigation, dual-zone climate control and a 12-speaker audio system. Driver assistance features like lane departure warning, active park assist, blind spot monitoring and forward collision warning are available as well. One unique safety feature is the Explorer’s inflatable safety belts available in the rear seats that are perfect for protecting your little loved ones.

Speaking of seating, the Explorer creates a pleasant environment for drivers and passengers alike. Offering up to three rows of seating, the Explorer provides ample headroom and legroom - even for adult passengers. The second row comes standard with bench seating, but can be changed to more comfortable captain’s chairs. However, you’ll have to reduce your passenger count to six versus the maximum seven seats available in total. It should also be noted that the Explorer can accommodate up to three car seats as it comes equipped with all the necessary anchors and connectors. Cloth seating comes standard, but leather seating is available and well worth the upgrade. Best of all, the Explorer offers one of the most impressive cargo areas of its class, affording up to 81.7 cubic feet of space.

Of course, it would be a crime to talk about the Explorer without talking about the vehicle’s performance. The 2018 Explorer features a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates up to 290 horsepower. While it is fairly efficient at 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, the optional 280-horsepower, 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine gets 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. A twin-turbo 3.5-liter Ecoboost engine option reduces the fuel economy but provides stronger acceleration thanks to a whopping 365 horsepower. All engines come paired with a six-sped automatic transmission that’s surprisingly smooth. And though front-wheel drive comes standard, four-wheel drive is available with all trims, providing the Explorer with the best possible off-road performance. Included with Sport and Platinum trims are hill descent control and a Terrain Management System that prepares the vehicle to handle difficult driving conditions such as mud, snow, grass, gravel and sand.
